Yangon is like a piece of jade. For the first-time visitor, it’s strikingly beautiful, albeit with a few rough edges, but it’s bound to a complex history that needs a keen mind to understand its genesis and formation. Now, thanks to a million-dollar polish courtesy of investment from beyond Myanmar’s borders, the city’s fortunes have sky-rocketed. From the gilded stupas to the spruced up downtown facades, it sparkles like an coveted gem and can justly claim to being considered an equal to the likes of Luang Prabang, Hanoi and Penang, the other colonial jewels of South-east Asia. Put simply, Yangon is having a bit of a moment.
There is much to see and explore in and around Mandalay. Beautiful monasteries made of teak wood, the U Bein bridge, the unfinished Mingun pagoda and the ancient cities of Amarapura and Ava. Gain insight into the art of producing gold foil in Mandalay’s ‘Gold Pounders District’.
The town of Pyin Oo Lwin is only a few hours drive away from Mandalay. Situated on a high plateau, Pyin Oo Lwin once used to be a retreat for the British during the hot summer months. Nowadays, Pyin Oo Lwin is dominated by colonial style houses and features an exciting market and a marvellous park.
An absolute must see is Bagan. More than 3'000 temples can be found spread out on an area of around 40 km2. Amongst those temples are also the important Ananda Temple or the impressive Shwezigon Pagoda.
Especially early in the morning and at dusk, one can capture magic moments in Bagan. Maybe even from the air out of a hot-air balloon, which rise up early in the morning.
The famous leg rowers and floating gardens are the highlights of Inle Lake which is located at an altitude of 900 metres, southeast of Mandalay.
A special experience is a cruise in one of the long tail boats. You will also have the opportunity to visit silk and jewellery manufacturers.
