From pristine beaches, verdant paddy fields and tropical jungles to the rich cultural traditions that permeate almost every aspect of the lives of its inhabitants Bali has it all.
In the southwest of Bali you can marvel at the most famous temple of the Indonesian island. Literally translated, the name of the building means "land in the middle of the sea" and is often referred as the sea temple. Due to its extraordinary beauty, the Hindu temple is one of the most popular sights and, along with the rice fields, Bali's most famous photo motif.
In front of the coast, Pura Tanah Lot is located on a small rocky island and can only be reached on foot at low tide. A short climb leads towards the entrance, where a fence limits access to the inner court, which is reserved only for religious visitors. The inner court of the temple is decorated with numerous figures representing Meru, the mountain of the gods.
At the foot of the temple rock we find two small caves. One contains a spring of fresh water that rises in the sea, the other is home to a number of sacred snakes, always guarded by priests.
Wild jungle, magical temples, numerous yoga studios and incredibly delicious food: 30 km away from the capital Denpasar lies Ubud. Located in the highlands of the island, this small town is considered the cultural center of Bali. There is no other place where you can feel the spiritual power of the island as much as here. Bali is a volcanic island and scenically beautiful, but the valleys surrounding Ubud exude an intense energy all of their own.
The most common religion in Bali is Hinduism, which is why you can find many traditional temples here. Fairytale-like overgrown demonic stone figures, ponds with huge water lilies and typical Balinese palm roofs - the Saraswati Temple offers this unique sight.
The Gunung Lebah Temple, too, conveys a particular feeling of serenity. The sacred buildings are particularly impressive after the dark when they are illuminated.
Please note that the temples are not intended as tourist attractions but are important sacred places for the locals. If you respect the rules, dress appropriately and behave quietly, the Balinese are happy to let you participate in their tradition.
Also worth seeing: The popular Monkey Forest Nature Park. The sacred monkey forest is located south of Ubud's city center and is worth a visit just for its mystical trees, lianas and free hanging roots.
Following the winding paths down small stairways into the jungle, you reach the three sacred temples of Pura Dalem Agung, Pura Beij and Pura Prajapati. However, only locals are allowed to enter these temples. But the impressive roots and trees, often inhabited by bats, are a natural spectacle in themselves.
The highlight of this part of the jungle are the 600 to 700 monkeys that live here. Already at the entrance you are greeted by the small curious animals. Even though they are quite used to visitors and look very cute, the monkeys can also be quite naughty. Therefore, it is important to keep your pockets closed, to keep the monkeys from taking away loose objects like jewelry, hats or bags.
A fascinating sight and the proverbial postcard motif are the numerous rice fields on Bali. You will encounter them everywhere on the Indonesian island, but around Ubud, you will find especially impressive rice terraces. The entrance to the Tegalalang terraces is free of charge, but in some places the locals might ask for a small donation. It is best to plan a visit very early in the morning or late in the afternoon, to avoid the tourist crowds.
In contrast to the very touristy rice fields near Ubud, the rice terraces of Jatiluwih are mostly untouched. As they are difficult to reach by public transport, major tourism has stayed away from them. Still, the sights are well worth the excursion. And remember that private drivers in Bali are usually very cheap.
Enthroned on a 70m high cliff stands the majestic temple of Pura Luhur.
Built like a fortress to the sea, it is supposed to protect the people of the island from evil spirits and demons. The real attraction, however, is the breathtaking scenery of rocks, sea and spectacular sunsets. This sight results in a unique panorama, which is also a popular photo motif.
Several paths lead over the cliff on which Pura Luhur is located. At many places you have a fantastic view of the temple, the roaring waves and the sunrise or sunset. At sunset, the popular Kecak dance performances take place here daily in the open-air theater vis-à-vis. Because the seats are booked up quickly, you should secure a ticket by 5 pm at the latest.
